The Islam, Western’s Enemy?

Abstract

In Occident, Islam is represented in a sloping way conditioned by negative stereotypes that identify it with fanaticism, terrorism and risk of invasion. Josep M. Tortosa analyses the politics that mediate in this negative perception projecting Islam as an enemy. It shows how this construction of the enemy has the effect of increasing the cohesion inside groups. In this way, accentuating the differences between societies, the European Union constructs a common European and Western identity and in USA, Islam substitues the old enemy of communism.
