The axiologies of social desirability
An empirical study on the characteristics that define a good member of society in Spain
Abstract
This study examines the characteristics that define a good member of society from the perspective of what is socially desirable in Spain. In societies where morals and values are based on religion, being a good member of society is consistent with the notion of being faithful. In secular societies, being an ideal member of society coincides with notions of citizenship. This study examines the influence of both value systems on what constitutes a good member of society from a socially desirable perspective. It demonstrates empirically the coexistence of secular and religious value systems in the socially desirable imaginary in Spain. It then assesses the importance of each value system in defining the ideal of a good member of society, noting that the notion of citizenship, characteristic of secular states, is not the only operative factor. It also examines what is desirable in the notion of citizenship, including activities associated with essential global citizenship, an expanded definition that incorporates global and ecological factors. Finally, a latent structure behind the characterisation of citizenship in Spain is observed through a factorial analysis, identifying the cognitive and behavioural components of attitudes towards the attributes considered. The analysis uses data from a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project (2022).
