Temporary exit from employment as an alternative to retirement: Some expert opinions
Abstract
The aim of this article is to present and discuss the innovative proposal of temporary exit from paid employment throughout the life course as an alternative to traditional retirement policies. We start from a critical analysis of the three-stage life course (education, employment, and retirement) characteristic of industrialized societies; a model of organization that tends to reproduce age, gender and class inequalities. Using a variant of the Delphi method, opinions from a strategic sample of experts are gathered. Most experts hold the opinion that temporary paid exits from employment throughout the life course are justified for purposes of voluntary caretaking or training and affect retirement in a relative manner. The results are discussed attending to the previous theoretical proposal. Keywords
